The perfect list for eco-conscious couples planning 2026/27 weddings ( plus some festive-season sustainable gift ideas to get you in the spirit!)
Here Are My 9 Top Tips for a Greener Wedding.
If you’re currently planning your 2026 or 2027 wedding (or just how to pop the all-important question!) and dreaming of a celebration that honours both your love and the Earth, then pour yourself a mug of organic herbal tea (or maybe spiced mulled cider) cos this one’s for you.
As a celebrant who adores nature, loves a good sprinkle of Pagan magic, and has witnessed “green-hearted” couples tying their own knot, I can safely say: you absolutely can have a gorgeous, joy-filled, personality-packed wedding without leaving a trail of carbon behind you.
And the festive season? Perfect time to get your hands on sustainable goodies to help make it happen.
Let’s explore how to create a wedding that’s greener than the Grinch…but far more lovable.
(Talking of the green haired one… are you, team Carey or team Cumberbatch?)… Anyway, I digress!
1. Choose a Venue That Loves the Earth as Much as You Do
The biggest eco-impact of any wedding usually starts with the venue. Instead of somewhere requiring tons of decoration, travel and waste, consider a venue that already offers natural beauty… a woodland barn, a historic manor with garden lawns, a rustic farm with local produce, or a small countryside hideaway. These venues often use renewable energy, support local food suppliers, manage waste responsibly, and already have beautiful surroundings, meaning Mother Nature does most of the decorating for free.
For example, venues like South Farm in Hertfordshire describe themselves as offering eco-friendly and zero-waste weddings, combining rustic charm with sustainability. South Farm
Choosing a venue like this can drastically reduce transport emissions (both for you and your guests), cut down on décor and waste, and set the tone for a clear eco-conscious intention from the get-go.
2. Ditch the Single-Use Décor… Go Seasonal, Borrowed, or Reusable
Green weddings don’t have to look bare or boring, they just get clever with their décor. Instead of buying new decorations, or investing in plastic balloons or lanterns destined for landfill, think outside the box:
Potted plants or herbs: Use houseplants, herbs or small trees as part of your table décor. After the wedding, they can go home with guests, or you can rehome them in your garden or house.
Pre-loved décor: Many UK wedding groups buy, swap or lend décor items (tablecloths, lanterns, candle holders, bunting). It’s budget-friendly, sustainable, and often more unique than mass-produced décor.
Fabric bunting, batik drapes or recycled textiles: These add warmth and character, and they can be kept, reused, or rehomed post-wedding.
Candlelight – soy or beeswax: Where allowed they guarantee fewer harsh lights, more ambience. Candles made from natural wax are better for air and planet than paraffin or single-use lighting. * It goes without saying, please use them safely*
Foraged greenery and seasonal foliage: If your venue allows it, adding foraged leaves, berries, branches and natural materials gives your day a wild, natural vibe. Perfect if you love Pagan or earth-centred aesthetics.
If you’re planning a festive-season proposal or engagement party, you could even use Christmas-worthy sustainable decorations, then reuse them on your wedding day. Two uses, one price, zero guilt…win, win.
4. Eco-Friendly Florals
Flowers can be one of the biggest sources of waste in weddings, especially when they’re flown in, delivered in foam, or tossed immediately after the ceremony. But there are plenty of lovely alternatives.
Use seasonal, locally-grown flowers (British blooms, UK flower farms, winter berries, foliage, etc.).
Choose florists who are foam-free and use reusable or compostable structures.
Go for dried or preserved flowers… they’re timeless, take on a beautiful vintage/dreamy vibe, and can be kept as mementos.
Try living bouquets…small shrubs, herbs, or even potted plants you can nurture after the big day.
These ideas not only look beautiful, but they are also a tangible expression of your commitment to the Earth.
5. Feast Without the Footprint
Food and drink can be one of the biggest environmental impacts at a wedding. But it doesn’t have to be. With a bit of thoughtful planning, you can serve up a delicious banquet that’s kind to the planet and still worthy of celebration.
Choose a caterer who uses seasonal, local produce.
Offer plant-based or veggie-forward menus, meat doesn’t have to be the default (and many guests appreciate a thoughtful, eco-friendly menu).
Use locally produced drinks… British beers, ciders, wines or spirits, rather than imported bottles. ( and have fun visiting a local vineyard or two…Here in the East we have some fabulous wineries, check out Burnt House Vineyard near Stowmarket for one….
Avoid single-use plastic cutlery, bottles, straws or plates. Better yet: hire crockery and cutlery, use washable linens, and compost leftovers or donate surplus food.
Consider donating leftover food or flowers to local care homes or charities, where allowed, a wonderful way to spread love and avoid waste.
Eco-conscious catering shows your values and gives guests a taste of something different, thoughtful, and delicious.
6. Sustainable Festive Gift Ideas (That Also Double as Wedding Bits!)
With the festive season wrapping around us what better time to think about sustainable wedding gifts or gifts to yourself? Here are some fab ideas that feed into your eco-wedding plans:
Reusable glass jars and bottles, great for homemade favours, love potion stations (if you go for a witchy/pagan vibe), or jars of herbs/spices.
Handmade beeswax or soy candles… atmospheric, natural, and reusable if you go for jars.
Plantable seed-paper stationery, invites, “save-the-dates”, place-cards or thank you notes that can be planted after use.
Locally crafted décor pieces… potteries, wooden signage, reclaimed wood signs, handmade bunting…supporting indie makers and reducing import demand.
Wedding-planning notebooks made from recycled or eco paper. Practical, pretty and planet friendly.
Eco-friendly skincare or pamper sets. Perfect for pre-wedding self-care and avoids plastic packaging.
Contributions toward sustainable suppliers, e.g. fund a living-tree planting, a donation to an environmental charity, or pay toward an eco-conscious caterer or florist.
This festive season is a brilliant time to align gifts with values, whether you’re gifting each other, yourself, or your wedding dream.
7. Ethical Rings That Sparkle… Sustainably
If you’re thinking about rings, there are plenty of gorgeous, earth-conscious choices out there. Ethically-sourced rings, lab-grown diamonds, recycled gold, vintage rings or handmade artisan pieces, all of which significantly reduce environmental and social harm compared with newly mined stones and metals.
UK-based directories like The Natural Wedding Company compile lists of ethical jewellers and wedding-ring makers offering Fairtrade metals, recycled precious metals and sustainably sourced gemstones. The Natural Wedding Company+1
If you want something more earthy and unique, consider artisan-made or reclaimed jewellery from small makers who care about provenance and sustainability.
8. Eco-Ceremonies (My Favourite Bit!)
Because of course as a Pagan leaning celebrant who loves Mother Earth, this is where my heart truly sings. Sustainable ceremonies feel deeper, more authentic, and often more connected to both the land and your values.
Here are some ideas:
A handfasting ritual using recycled or naturally-dyed ribbons, or even hand-woven cords.
A nature-blessing ritual: blessing the land, calling in the elements, honouring Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
Tree-planting ceremony: plant a sapling to grow with your marriage, a living symbol of your union.
A circle ceremony: ask guests to gather in a circle around you and your partner removing the formality and creating a sense of shared community.
Use a seasonal altar, celebrate the Sabbat or time of year you love.
Eco-ceremonies like this don’t just minimise environmental impact, they add soul, spirit and deeper meaning. They turn your wedding into an act of love for each other and for the Earth.
9. Make Sustainable Choices Fun & Visible
One challenge many couples face is how to encourage guests to go green too?
But it doesn’t need to feel preachy. A few gentle nudges and a lot of love can do the trick. Try:
Putting “green tips” cards on tables (car sharing, recycling bins, plantable confetti, etc.).
Setting up a car-sharing board or suggesting group transport to reduce carbon footprint.
Offering reusable cups or drinkware (instead of disposables).
Having a compost or recycling station — make it easy for guests.
Offering a charitable option in lieu of traditional gifts.
Using biodegradable or eco-friendly confetti (wildflower petals, dried herbs, leaf confetti) for that magical “just married” photo without plastic. (I’ve been saving rose petals all summer for my son’s 2026 wedding!)
Small, visible touches make it easier for guests to embrace your values, and reinforce the fact that your ceremony isn’t just about you, but about respect for the planet.
And Remember…It’s Not About Perfection
No wedding is ever 100% sustainable, and that’s absolutely fine. What matters is intention, awareness, and celebration. Even a few thoughtful eco-friendly swaps make a huge difference, especially when combined with love, intention, and community.
If every couple who tied the knot this year made even small green changes, choosing local flowers, hiring instead of buying, sharing transport, going meat-light, we’d see real impact.
So, Are You Ready to Plan Your Planet-Friendly Ceremony?
If you’re dreaming of a wedding that honours your relationship and the Earth beneath your feet, I’d love to craft a bespoke ceremony that’s soulful, sustainable and, of course, delightfully Funky.
Let’s celebrate love that gives back to the planet because a greener wedding is a happier wedding….for everyone.
Be sure to meet suppliers, ask questions about their eco-credentials such as recycled materials? zero-waste? local sourcing?
mix & match: source your outfits from one place, rings from another, stationery from yet another… the beauty of eco-directories is variety.
Sustainable doesn’t always mean expensive – many ethical or recycled goods (or pre-loved, reused décor) can be budget-friendly and full of personality.
Plan ahead (especially for 2026/27 weddings) – ethical suppliers are often small indie businesses and may book up faster than big “standard” vendors.
